What are debit orders and why do South African businesses use them?
A debit order (also called a direct debit) is an instruction that allows a business to collect money directly from a customers bank account with their permission. It is widely used in South Africa to collect monthly subscriptions, premiums, repayments and membership fees.
Instead of waiting for customers to do EFTs or pay by card each month, you set up a mandate once and your collections run on an agreed date, at an agreed amount, until the mandate ends. This gives you:
- More reliable monthly income
- Fewer late payments and follow ups
- Less manual admin, spreadsheets and reconciliations
Imagin8 Debit Orders wraps this proven payment method in an easy to use online portal and practical local support.
Who is Imagin8 Debit Orders for?
Imagin8 Debit Orders works well for almost any South African business that bills customers on a regular basis, for example:
- Subscription services and software companies
- Insurance, financial services and value added products

- Rental agencies and landlords
- Security, cleaning and maintenance services
- Any business offering payment plans or monthly retainers
If your customers pay you every month, Imagin8 Debit Orders can help you collect those payments on time.

Frequently Asked Questions
With a normal EFT, your customer must remember to pay you every time, then go into their banking app and make the payment. With a debit order, they give you permission once, through a mandate. After that, payments run automatically on the agreed date and amount until the mandate ends or changes, which improves on time collections and reduces manual work.
Yes, you can set up recurring collections (for example monthly subscriptions, instalments or premiums) and you can also arrange once off collections where suitable. This gives you flexibility if you take a deposit, charge an initiation fee or handle ad hoc items in addition to regular billing.
Once a debit order has been processed against your customers account, successful collections are normally paid out to you within 7 days. This 7 day payout cycle is built into our service so that you can plan your cash flow with confidence.
If a debit order is returned unpaid, you will see the result in your Customer Management Portal. You can then decide whether to contact the customer, adjust the collection date or amount, or re attempt the collection. Our team can guide you on practical next steps and good practice in your industry.
